New to Trail Running?

Welcome to the Trails!

Hi there! If you’re thinking about signing up for the Paradise Found 5k or Here’s Johnny 10K at Coler Mountain Bike Preserve, welcome! These trail races are fun, friendly, and a great place to start your trail running journey.

I remember how I felt before my first trail run. I was excited and nervous at the same time. If you’re new to running or switching from sidewalks to trails, this post is for you. I’ll share what helped me get ready for race day. With the right mindset, some good gear, and a little practice, you’ll be ready too. You might even end up loving trail running as much as I do.

Warming Up is Key

Before running on trails, it’s a good idea to wake up your muscles. Instead of holding long stretches, try dynamic warm-ups like:

  • A light jog

  • Walking lunges

  • Leg swings

  • Hip circles

These help you move better and feel looser. You don’t have to do anything fancy. Just move your body and get your blood flowing.

Pro Tip: You’ll walk about a mile from the parking lot to the start line. That short walk makes a great warm-up.

Get Your Gear Ready

The right gear makes a big difference when you’re running on trails.

Hydration

Bring water with you. Some runners use a handheld bottle, a waist pack, or a hydration vest. Pick what feels best.

Good news: You don’t have to carry too much. There will be hydration stations at mile 1.5, mile 4.5, and at the finish line to help you stay hydrated.

Clothing

Wear breathable clothes that keep you dry. Moisture-wicking shirts and trail socks help prevent blisters and chafing.

Shoes

You don’t need special trail shoes for this race. Most of the course is smooth and packed. But between miles 4 and 5, there’s a rocky section with roots and uneven ground. Go slow there and watch your step.

Pro Tip: Try running in your race-day gear during practice so you feel confident and comfortable on race day.

Know the Plan for Race Day

  • Pick up your race bib and chip on Friday, October 3, between 9 AM and 6 PM at Coler Grove.

  • Use the pins to attach your bib to the front of your shirt.

  • Tie the timing chip to your shoe using the twist ties. It works best when it’s close to the ground.

  • The average pace is about 20 minutes per mile. Practice running or walking at that pace during training.

Fuel and Hydration Tips

Trail running can take more energy than running on the road. You’ll want to stay fueled and hydrated.

Here’s what worked for me:

  • Drink water often, even if you’re not thirsty yet

  • Use electrolyte drinks or chews when it’s hot out

  • Eat small snacks like gels, bars, or chews during your run

You’ll have support along the way. Hydration stations will be waiting for you at mile 1.5, mile 4.5, and the finish line.

What If It Rains? Here’s How to Handle It

Trail running in the rain can actually be fun… if you’re prepared for it. Weather can change fast, especially in the fall, so here are a few tips from runners who have faced wet conditions on race day:

  • Dress in quick-drying layers. Avoid cotton, and wear moisture-wicking fabrics that help pull water away from your skin.

  • Wear a hat or visor to keep rain out of your eyes while running.

  • Watch your footing. Wet rocks can be slick, so shorten your stride and stay alert.

  • Bring dry clothes and shoes to change into after the race. Your future self will thank you.

  • Embrace the mess. Muddy shoes and splashy trails make for the best stories.

If it rains during the Here’s Johnny 10K, the trail will still be beautiful, and maybe a little extra exciting! Just slow down when needed, smile through the splashes, and enjoy the adventure.

However… we’re not worried about the weather this year! AccuWeather’s forecast for October 4, 2025, in Bentonville, Arkansas, shows a high of 80 degrees with just a 10% chance of rain and 0.00 in of precipitation. The Old Farmer’s Almanac also calls for “sunny and warm” conditions during that week!

How I Get Ready!

Here’s what helped me feel confident before the race:

  1. I signed up early so I could plan ahead
  2. I trained on local trails and hilly paths
  3. I followed trail running pages on social media for ideas and encouragement
  4. I posted my progress and tagged the race so I felt part of the community

This race was the start of something new for me. It can be the same for you.

What should I bring on race day?
Bring your race bib, water or a bottle, snacks, good shoes, and a great attitude.
