Osage Park’s Air Spade Project: Protecting Nature’s Roots
This week, our team at Osage Park has been putting a fascinating tool to work, the Air Spade. This device uses compressed air to safely move and loosen soil without damaging delicate tree roots. It’s an incredible tool for tree preservation, allowing us to work gently around nature while maintaining the health of our urban woodland.
Caring for the Cherry Blossom Heart
Our current project focuses on the Cherry Blossom Heart at Osage Park, where we’re carefully uncovering the root systems of several redbud and cherry trees. Using the Air Spade, we can life and relocate these trees safely, giving them the best chance to thrive in their new home.
This process also helkps us address areas where the soil has historially stayed too wet. In the past, deep mulch layers caused excessive decomposition and stress to tree roots. By correcting this with proper aeration and soil management, we’re creating a healthier environment for long-term tree growth.
Root Collar Techniques for Healthy Trees
A key part of this project is replanting with the correct root collar technique, ensuring roots grow downward and the tree’s cambium layer grows upward. This natural alignment supports healthy oxygen flow, prevents rot, and encourages strong, stable growth. Our goal is to give each tree the best possible foundation for decades of beauty and shade.
A Second Life at The Quiver Archery Range
Once the redbuds are safely removed, they’re being transported across Osage Park to The Quiver Archery Range, where they’ll take root along the berm. Over time, these transplanted trees will enhance the natural landscape, adding both beauty and a natural safety buffer for archers and visitors alike.
Sustainability and Preservation in Action
At Peel Compton Foundation, we believe every action should reflect our commitment to nature and preservation. Nothing goes to waste, plants that can’t remain in one area are given a second chance to flourish elsewhere. Through thoughtful projects like this, we’re not only preserving the beauty of Osage Park but also strengthening the ecosystems that make Northwest Arkansas such a special place to explore.
By working hand-in-hand with nature, we ensure that our parks remain vibrant, healthy, and welcoming for generations to come.
