A Man to Match the Mountains
Dr. Neil Compton’s Ozark Life and Legacy
Born and raised in Bentonville, Arkansas, Dr. Neil Compton was many things: a physician, a writer, a photographer, and a fierce protector of the wild Ozarks. In a 1983 Arkansas Times profile, he was described as “a man to match the mountains,” a phrase that captured his quiet strength and lifelong dedication to preserving the natural beauty of the region he loved.
Compton’s conservation legacy began with a deep appreciation for the landscapes of the Buffalo River, where he spent much of his free time hiking, paddling, and photographing the scenery. But when the river came under threat, slated to be dammed and drastically altered, Compton took action. Rallying a grassroots movement of environmental advocates, he helped lead the successful fight to preserve the Buffalo in its natural state.
Thanks to those efforts, the Buffalo River became America’s First National River in 1972, setting a powerful precedent for environmental protection nationwide.
A Legacy Grown from the Ground Up
Today, you can step into the heart of Compton’s story right here in his former family home, now part of the Compton Gardens & Arboretum. The space has been thoughtfully redesigned to reflect both the man and the mission: bringing the outside in, opening up the inside to garden views, and offering immersive experiences that celebrate Ozark ecology, native plants, and Compton’s conservation legacy.
You’re invited to explore the exhibit “A Man to Match the Mountains”, a tribute to Compton’s life and impact. Inside the home, you’ll find historic interpretation alongside a modern architectural vision that honors nature and invites reflection.
Garden & Arboretum
Outside the house, more than six acres of gardens and trails wind through Champion Trees, native plantings, shaded woodlands, and curated landscapes. This combination of wild and formal spaces reflects the spirit of Compton’s own backyard garden, originally inspired by the plant communities he discovered along the Buffalo.
Since 2004, Compton Gardens & Arboretum has served as an urban oasis in the middle of downtown Bentonville. It is the only Level II Arboretum in the state of Arkansas. The grounds are more than beautiful. They’re a living classroom and a place of ongoing stewardship, honoring the values that Dr. Compton held dear.
