Pickleball Rules for Beginners: 7 Easy Sayings You’ll Actually Remember

Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and it’s easy to see why. It’s social, active, and beginner-friendly. But if you’re new to the game, the rules can feel like a lot to remember.

That’s where this guide comes in.

These simple, catchy sayings will help you learn pickleball rules for beginners without overthinking it. Whether you’re playing your first match or getting ready for your next event, these tips will keep you confident on the court.

1. “Too many cooks in the kitchen”

Pickleball rule: Don’t volley in the kitchen (no-volley zone)

The kitchen is the area right at the net. You cannot hit the ball out of the air while standing in it.

Let it bounce first, then step in.

2. “Bounce before you pounce”

Pickleball rule: The double-bounce rule

After the serve:

  • The receiving team must let it bounce
  • Then the serving team must let it bounce

After those two bounces, volleys are fair game.

3. “No toe on the line, you’ll be just fine”

Pickleball rule: Proper serving position

When serving:

  • Both feet must stay behind the baseline
  • No stepping on the line

Even a toe fault = lost serve.

4. “Serve it to earn it”

Pickleball rule: Only the serving team scores

If your team isn’t serving, you can’t score points.

Focus on winning the rally to earn your serve back.

5. “Start right to play right”

Every game begins:

  • From the right-hand service court

Serves must be:

  • Underhand
  • Paddle below your waist

7. “Return and stay stern”

  • Don’t rush the net
  • The ball must bounce again before volleys
