This room is not original to the home, but was added by one of the subsequent owners after the Peel’s moved out. This would have originally been an outdoor space separating the outdoor kitchen from the rest of the house. We’ve turned this room into an exhibit space that highlights some of the most fascinating Peel house relics.

For instance, the archaeological remains that were unearthed during the ice house excavation are displayed in the case against the wall. In the case you will see historic ceramics, glassware, animal bones, currency, and ice house tools that date to the Peel’s occupation in the home. Pay close attention to the tea-leaf china remains. This china was popular during the 19th century as the stylish tea-leaf design and durable ironstone material combined fashion and function.

In this case, you will also find 20th century tools that were left behind by the owners who moved in after the Peel’s moved out. These regular tools and farm implements suggest that the ice house was no longer being used to store ice. Instead, it was likely used a storage shed for farm tools and other equipment.

Direct your attention to the photos of the restoration process. These images were taken before the restoration began, and you can see the poor condition the home was in when we acquired the property. See if you can find the sewing room. In it, you can see the staircase that leads into this room. Another photo shows Mary Emaline and Samuel’s bedroom. Notice the vines growing through the window, and the piles of mattresses that squatters were sleeping on. Another photo is of the ladies parlor on the first floor with heaps of trash scattered across the floor, and the last photo is of the narrow staircase on the upstairs landing that leads to the tower.

You can now make your way into the Outdoor Kitchen which is through the door to the left of the ice house archaeology cabinet.
