The 2nd floor served as the family’s private living space and would have been less formally decorated than the main floor below. The landing area could have been used as an informal sitting space where the breeze from the open French doors could be enjoyed. This is also where they accessed their grand second story balcony. The narrow staircase you see leads to the tower that was a playroom for the Peel children as well as the other children who lived here after they moved out. If you look up into the tower, you will see two black boards on the wall with the initials EE & ME above them. They were left by the English family that lived in the home after the Peels moved out and were used by their twin girls Elizabeth English and Margary English.

On the north wall, just to the right of the boys door, you’ll see images of the Peel children. By the time they moved into the home, the oldest Peel child was 21 while the youngest hadn’t yet been born. In fact, Mary Emaline was pregnant with their youngest child, Mary Ruby, and she was the only child born in this house. Alice was already married and never lived here, and we suspect James, who was already a practicing lawyer by 1875, didn’t live here either. The seven other Peel children would have lived here until they had secured their place in society through either marriage or career.
